Good riddance. Lindsey Graham is finally gone. The South Carolina senator died suddenly yesterday at his Washington, D.C. home from an aortic dissection at age 71, right after shuffling back from a trip to Ukraine.
For decades, Graham was the ultimate political chameleon, reshaping his entire worldview whenever the wind blew a different direction just to hold onto power. His death leaves a massive vacuum in the Senate, which is now up to South Carolina’s Republican Governor, Henry McMaster, to temporarily patch over with a hand-picked replacement.
Because Graham’s seat was already on the ballot for this November, things are about to get incredibly messy. State officials now have to scramble to set up a rushed special primary so Republicans can pick a nominee to face Democrat Annie Andrews. One less career politician in the chamber, but the fight over his seat is just getting started.
