Where the U.S. Military Is Active Today: Operations, Coalitions, and Support Missions

The United States is currently involved in several key international conflicts and active military operations, rather than a single formally declared full-scale war.

Because the United States Congress has not formally declared war since World War II, modern U.S. military operations are conducted under statutory authorizations (such as Authorizations for Use of Military Force), international coalitions, security assistance frameworks, and executive order directives.

Key Active U.S. Military Engagements

1. Middle East Operations & Maritime Security

The U.S. maintains an extensive naval and air defense posture throughout the Middle East. Under coalitions such as Operation Prosperity Guardian, U.S. Naval forces actively protect commercial shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait against anti-ship missiles and drone attacks originating from Houthi-controlled regions in Yemen. Additionally, U.S. air and naval strikes have targeted missile launching infrastructure, weapons depots, and command nodes.

2. Ongoing Counter-ISIS Operations (Iraq & Syria)

Under Operation Inherent Resolve, U.S. forces remain deployed in parts of Iraq and northeastern Syria. These forces act in advisory, intelligence, and counterterrorism capacities alongside regional partner forces (such as the Syrian Democratic Forces) to prevent the resurgence of ISIS remnants and secure detention facilities.

3. Support & Military Assistance to Ukraine

While the U.S. does not have active ground combat units fighting in Ukraine, it plays a vital supporting role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The U.S. provides comprehensive military assistance, including advanced artillery, air defense systems (e.g., Patriot missile batteries), real-time intelligence sharing, and logistical support to Ukrainian defense forces.

4. Counterterrorism Operations (Somalia & Global Operations)

Through U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), the military conducts targeted airstrikes, intelligence operations, and training missions alongside Somali National Army forces to combat the al-Shabaab terrorist network. Similar specialized counterterrorism and intelligence operations occur in various international partner nations under broader global security frameworks.
