Beyond the Smoke: The Lasting Health Harms of Ground Zero

The documents confirm a wide range of serious health harms linked to toxic exposure from the destruction of the World Trade Center. Here are the key findings:

· Lung Cancer: A 2025 study found that responders with severe dust exposure had nearly three times the risk of developing lung cancer compared to those with minimal exposure.
· Other Cancers: By 2020, over 23,000 program members had certified cancer conditions. Common types include prostate, thyroid, and breast cancers.
· Aerodigestive Disorders: Conditions like asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis, and GERD are among the most common, affecting over 48,000 members by 2021.
· Mental Health: PTSD is a significant concern, affecting roughly 23% of responders—far higher than the general population. Depression and anxiety are also prevalent.
· Brain Aging: Severe dust exposure and PTSD are linked to cognitive decline and early-onset dementia. Each month at Ground Zero was associated with 4-5 additional months of apparent brain aging.
· Liver Damage: About 14% of responders showed fat buildup in their livers, with those arriving earliest facing the highest risk.

If you or someone you know was in the exposure zone, you can look into the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program, which provides medical monitoring and treatment at no out-of-pocket cost.
