Before he became notorious for sex trafficking and financial manipulation, Jeffrey Epstein was once a teenage pianist. He attended one of the most prestigious arts camps in America—Interlochen Center for the Arts in northern Michigan. In the summer of 1967, Epstein enrolled in the National Music Camp. It was a program known for attracting talented young artists from around the world. Epstein was there to study piano. He was just one of thousands of students who passed through Interlochen’s rigorous programs over the decades.
But the connection didn’t end with his adolescence. Years later, Epstein became a wealthy financier with a taste for influence and control. He reappeared in the Interlochen orbit, this time as a donor. In the 1990s, he reportedly contributed funds to the camp. He also had a cabin constructed on the property known as the “Jeffrey Epstein Scholarship Lodge.” The lodge was situated in a secluded area of the campus. Reports indicated that Epstein had private access to it during his visits. That detail would later trigger intense concern, especially in light of Epstein’s long history of grooming and exploiting underage girls.
Former staff members and investigative journalists have raised red flags about Epstein’s adult relationship with the camp. This concern is especially strong considering his tendency to embed himself in spaces where minors were present. There is no public evidence that Epstein engaged in misconduct on Interlochen’s campus. However, the optics alone are concerning. An older man with access to a private cabin at a children’s arts camp has drawn serious scrutiny.
Following Epstein’s first conviction in 2008 for soliciting a minor, Interlochen quietly distanced itself. His name was removed from donor lists, and the lodge was no longer associated with him. After his 2019 arrest, Interlochen publicly confirmed that it had severed all ties with him. They stated they had no knowledge of any wrongdoing during his visits.
The Interlochen connection may seem like a footnote in Epstein’s sprawling and deeply disturbing legacy. However, it’s emblematic of his broader pattern. He inserted himself into elite institutions. He built credibility through philanthropy and used influence to gain proximity to the vulnerable. Even a respected arts camp in rural Michigan wasn’t immune.
